In 2015, WHC provided health care services to 371 residents of southwestern Pennsylvania. There were 105 new patients and 266 return patients, averaging over 2.64 encounters per person.
Almost all of these individuals would have been unable to afford health care services anywhere else. As the only free clinic in southwestern PA, the safety net services provided by WHC can be the difference between good health and a trip to the emergency room for many area residents.
The demographics of those served by WHC are not surprising for anyone following the evolution of health care in our country. But, they may help to dispel many stereotypes for others about individuals who are uninsured.
- 80% of WHC patients were residents of Fayette County; 45% of these make their home in Connellsville
- The overall percentage of male patients increased in 2015; 54% of new patients are male
- Overall, 40% of patients are single, the largest demographic group for marital status. In the past, the largest group has traditionally been individuals who are married.
- 59% of WHC patients are employed, including 56% of new patients. The average individual income is $10,144, well below the Federal Poverty Level.
- 76% of WHC patients live below or within 150% of the Federal Poverty Level
